Our GoodVision Peru team recently traveled deep into the Amazon, bringing vision care to three communities that don’t ever receive it, each with a story that mattered in its own way.
In the Ritamaka community in Amazonas, the team worked alongside Fundación OLI and LATAM Airlines to provide vision screenings and eye care to artisans participating in LATAM’s Segundo Vuelo program. Their craft depends on the kind of close, detailed work that failing eyesight can quietly undermine. Good vision here is about preserving knowledge, technique, and cultural heritage passed down for generations. Protecting an artisan’s sight means protecting livelihoods and tradition.
At I.E. No. 601051 Sachachorro, a school in the lower Belén area of Iquitos, the team screened local children for vision problems. Undetected vision issues are one of the quietest ways a child can fall behind in school, easy to miss, easy to mistake for a learning or attention problem instead of what it actually is. By screening students directly at their school, the team caught potential issues early, before they could shape a child’s relationship with learning.
At Casa de la Niña de Loreto, a center supporting girls and adolescents from Amazonian communities and vulnerable backgrounds, the team provided specialized eye care as part of a broader vision health campaign. Good vision touches nearly everything: the ability to learn, carry out daily tasks, access new opportunities, and build the kind of confidence that shapes a future. For girls already navigating difficult circumstances, clear vision is one less barrier standing between them and what’s possible.
Three communities, three different needs, one throughline: distance and circumstance should never be the reason someone goes without the vision care they deserve. It is exactly the gap this trip was built to close.
